Intersection of Value Proposition and Privacy

Value Proposition vs privacy

Users of internet are becoming more comfortable to share private information with service providers, in return for superior service.  These are backed up by reports like Internet trends and Privacy reports.

Businesses are leveraging this mindset shift and offer personalized solutions at the cost of deeper personal information.  For example, take the case of Facebook messenger, considered one of the strong growth areas for the social media giant.

We, as humans, love to converse with each other.  And this conversation offer many insights into the individuals involved.  As an advertising business, Facebook has many benefits from this information.

Recently, the messenger team announced a new feature that can listen (or eavesdrop) your conversation and offer suggestions.  Here is one example use case – you are talking to your friend about an upcoming vacation to Phuket and messenger presents you with the top deals in beach resorts.  How cool is that?

As a business, the scope of using such a feature is enormous.  What Google does with emails in your Gmail inbox, Facebook will do the same with your social behavior and chats!

In the age where some employees consent to having a chip implant, someone eavesdropping a personal conversation is trivial – or is it?
