Certifications are like licenses!
I have a love for certifications. I started in 2004 with my first Java certification. As on date, I have about 6 Certifications to my credit.
I was talking about my interest in Certifications to one of my friends and he exclaimed:
I never see a point in certifications! They are a waste of time and money. It is only the experience that counts.
I didn’t disagree with him but tried to put forth a case.
Me: Great! Let’s talk about driving
Him: Sure…
M: There are two drivers to bet on. First one is highly experienced with about 25 years of experience across various categories of vehicles. Second one is relatively inexperienced but fresh out of driving school. Who in your opinion is better?
H: No-brainer. It would be the experienced guy
M: Absolutely, no question about it. But do you think the driving test he did about 25 years ago adds no value?
H: Hmm… can’t say that. It was needed to get a start!
M: Exactly my point with certifications, my friend!
Certifications don’t make you an expert. But they help to get you started from the right base.
Next time you have to choose a candidate — use his certifications as an attribute not as a deciding factor.
